Why CBD?

CBD oil derived from the hemp plant offers many health benefits. It is one of over 100 known cannabinoids. Research shows that it communicates with our ECS system (Endocannabinoid System). This central regulatory system in our bodies provides balance to many major organs. When it’s out of wack, CBD can help bring our ECS system back to status quo.

We have receptors for this system throughout our body all performing different tasks. Their goal is all the same, to restore the internal body systems to homeostasis despite what may be occurring in our external environment.

There are no feelings of euphoria in CBD oil extracted from this agricultural hemp. However marijuana-derived CBD, which does contain a psychoactive chemical compound called THC does get you high. (The products sold on this page are all hemp-derived and legal. See disclaimer at the bottom.)

What is Hemp?

Hemp is a species of the cannabis plant. The key difference that separates hemp from marijuana is the amount of CBD and THC present. Essentially, hemp has all the benefits without the high! There are many uses for hemp such as: organic supplements, fibers, bricks, natural plastics, paper, and more. For approximately 12,000 years, Hemp has been cultivated by many civilizations. Agriculturally grown hemp originates from the Cannabis sativa L. plant. The appearance is similar to that of bamboo and grows up to 15 feet before being harvested.

US Hemp Authority Announces First Certified Seals

March 1, 2019

U.S. Hemp Authority Announces Issuance of First 13 Certified Seals for Hemp Growers and Processors

Standardizing quality control and building a safer hemp industry from seed to shelf

WASHINGTON – March 1, 2019 – The U.S. Hemp Authority today announced the first awards of its Certification Seal to 13 outstanding companies that have met the stringent standards the industry laid out for quality and safety.

The following awardees have demonstrated their commitment to assuring that consumers have access to safe and accurately labeled hemp-derived products, including fiber, seed and extracts, such as cannabidiol (CBD).

  • CV Sciences, San Diego, CA
  • HempMeds, San Diego, CA
  • Medterra CBD, Irvine, CA
  • Balanced Health Botanicals, Denver, CO
  • Charlotte’s Web, Boulder, CO
  • HD Distribution, Louisville, CO
  • Bluebird Botanicals, Louisville, CO
  • Hemp Fusion, Miramar, FL
  • GenCanna, Winchester, KY
  • Shell Farms, Winchester, KY
  • Nature’s Hemp Oil, Lexington, KY
  • Hempworx, Las Vegas, NV
  • Barlean’s, Ferndale, WA

In addition to elevating consumer confidence in the quality and safety of hemp products, this voluntary certification demonstrates the industry’s commitment to working with federal and state regulators and law enforcement agencies. Modeled after existing federal regulations for manufacturing in the dietary supplement industry, these standards offer an industry-led model for any future regulations to ensure safety and quality.

“As the market for hemp-derived products undergoes rapid growth, it is critically important for us to signal to the world that we intend to act responsibly. Quality assurance and safety must come first, and that’s why we set off on this journey,” said Marielle Weintraub, PhD, president of the U.S. Hemp Authority. “Creating these standards was a long journey, but after thousands of pages of public and stakeholder input and countless hours of hard work, we are thrilled to announce our first awardees today.”

Established in 2018, the US Hemp Authority Certified Seal program was developed with the guidance of AgWin Group’s David Bossman, a veteran of agricultural self-regulation with no financial interests in the industry. The U.S. Hemp Authority sought input from more than 20,000 interested parties and reached out directly to every participant in a state-based hemp pilot project for whom contact information was publicly available.

The organization is working on an updated program, called Guidance Plan 2.0, which will take ongoing input from farmers and certified companies, as well as stakeholders in the fiber, oilseed, nutritional supplement and extract industries, to continually improve the certification. Engaging with interested parties will remain a priority as the process evolves.

The certification is designed specifically to educate hemp farmers and producers about Food and Drug Administration Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) and Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) to ensure that consistent quality is achieved. The U.S. Hemp Authority Certification Program is administered by experienced quality assurance and verification professionals from industry-leading food and agricultural companies. The certification is audited by Validus, a division of Where Food Comes From, Inc., a leading provider of certification and verification services.

About U.S. Hemp Authority

The U.S. Hemp Authority Certification Program is the hemp industry’s initiative to provide high standards, best practices and self-regulation, giving confidence to consumers, regulators and law enforcement that hemp-derived products are safe and legal. In an effort funded by the US Hemp Roundtable, and joined by organizations such as the Hemp Industries Association, state pilot project participants, industry-leading firms, top-tier testing laboratories and quality assessors, the U.S. Hemp Authority developed comprehensive guidance for growers and processors of hemp. Purest CBD oil Lab Results – HempWorx CBD Oil

We have the pure CBD you have been looking for. That is a pretty easy claim to make when you have just 2 ingredients and independent 3rd party lab results to back it up.

Here are just some of the independent, third party labs showing our CBD oils purity and other details.  These are the images/pages you NEED to care about.   The competition has trace levels of mold, pesticides, or metals… YIKES!  Thsi is what a CLEAN report looks like.  Until better regulations are in place, we have to be informed consumers.

To see even more information and details than what I’m showing you below, CLICK HERE and follow the link for “documentation”.

Ready to order? CLICK HERE.

These first 4 images are testing for the presence of specific CBD and THC related items.    The amount of THC shown is considered trace, fully legal (under the 0.3% federal limit), and is NOT psychoactive. It is considered a food grade amount, similar to how poppy seeds are legal, but can still possibly show trace amounts of other things.  Understandably, there are many people in professions that can’t consume our full spectrum product.  Have no fear!  I’m including the results for our THC-FREE CBD oil as well in the 3rd and 4th images:

This one is the Full spectrum 500 CBD oil:

Below is the Full Spectrum 750 CBD oil:

Below is our THC-FREE 500 CBD Oil:

Below is our THC-FREE 750 CBD oil:

Many companies only show the images above.  They stop short of the rest of the report.  That can be a warning sign if they aren’t giving you full disclosure.  Fortunately, we like transparency.   In this image below, our CBD oil is further analyzed for a number of other things including molds, pesticides, and metals which are listed in the left column.  N/D in the right column means “not detected”.

No Pesticides. No Mold.

This image is an overview of the product, but I wanted you to see it too:

So, there you have it.  Being a fully educated consumer is powerful.  I have another blog post showing what can appear on lab reports from the competition here:

CBD oil labels and lab results

How do I read CBD oil labels?  What’s this about CBD lab results?

CBD oil labels?  Lab Results?  Mold? Lead? Pesticides? Ethanol Extraction?  CO2 extraction?  Groups like the US Hemp Roundtable are working to embrace standards, best practices and self-regulation to bring an end to the confusion.  You could say it’s a bit of a wild west scenario at the moment.  It is up to us as consumers to educate ourselves anytime we put anything in and on our bodies.  (This goes for everything from our food and medications to beauty and cleaning products!)

Whenever a company makes an effort to post their lab results, look at them!

I love that HempWorx posts their third party lab results right on their page. (See them HERE, follow link for “documentation”) Just the mere presence of documentation being posted doesn’t mean it’s a clean report though.  I recently looked at another brand, and they had their reports online for everyone to see.  I guess they assume the typical customer won’t look at them.  They must be right because the other company’s reports showed traces of lead.  YIKES.  I don’t care if it’s under a certain level of concern, if I have a product choice, I’m going with the company that doesn’t have trace lead.

What about the other companies that are simply choosing to not post their labs? That is another warning sign that they simply can’t compete.  I like transparency, don’t you?

Let’s be honest with ourselves.   No one eats/consumes “clean” 100% of the time, but we can always “know better, do better” for ourselves.   Health concerns are why most people start to research CBD.  It could be any one of the many things our EndoCannabinoid System impacts.  (Our bodies are like engines that are only as good as the fuel we give it.)

A friend had a different product they tried recently, and that particular company was bragging on their website about their “gentle ethanol-based extraction method at -17°F. ”  Um.. what?  Sure enough, they posted their independent 3rd party lab results on their page, and the amount present in their product was over 5 TIMES the recommended limits for their state.  I thought people took CBD to help them get healthy? Not sick! Yikes!  Other companies may like that method because it’s cheap for them, but here’s why ethanol extraction is bad for you:

“Most of the ethanol in the body is broken down in the liver by an enzyme called alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH), which transforms ethanol into a toxic compound called acetaldehyde (CH3CHO), a known carcinogen.”  (Source:  )

Ok, I know all that is scary, BUT that’s why reputable companies are working hard to educate consumers to see through marketing tactics.  Another tactic is “Proprietary process”.  Those are fancy words to hide their probably-not-great extraction process….

Can I stop and point out how EXCITING it is that you have come to the point of researching this information because it means you are on the road to change and a healthier life?

Let’s talk about CBD Oil Labels:

Another thing to consider when looking at CBD oil labels is if they are compliant.  Did you know that it is possible for a product to make it to a store shelf without meeting guidelines?  Click HERE for FDA labeling guidelines (Check out that link, and the 132 page PDF document it links to.)  HempWorx works very hard to be compliant in all they do. If a company is making a nutritional product and using a label from a home printer, there’s another warning sign that purity standards might be at risk too.  There’s even rules on the type of font that has to be used!

Let’s look at the HempWorx label:

This is what compliant CBD oil labels should look like.  Look at the ingredients listed.  The HempWorx product only has 2-3 ingredients. (That 3rd ingredient is if there’s a flavor.)  The hemp seed oil is the carrier oil.  Some companies will use other types of oils, but HempWorx believes in keeping the CBD in a native oil that originated from. It makes sense right?  Next, is the CBD extract.  It is very important that it says “Extract” in there.  This is another purity indicator.  Other companies will use Isolates or attempt to mask that it is an isolate with some type of proprietary or trademarked blend.  Again, an extract is as pure as you can get. There’s nothing proprietary to be made about pure ingredients.  The key is in the process of keeping it pure and free of contaminates.

I’m extremely excited about this product, and am excited about what it is doing for so many people.

Is Hemp Marijuana?

Is Hemp the same as Marijuana? Is hemp marijuana?  It seems like there is still a lot of confusion about hemp, marijuana, cannabis, and CBD!   The answer is an absolute NO!  They are not the same thing.  While they both can carry health benefits, hemp is the helpful plant that gets you healthy, not high!

Cannabis is a name that describes both plants, but Hemp and Marijuana are cousins, not twins.  Better yet, a chihuahua and great dane are both dogs, but very different from each other.

The squash example:

hemp marijuanaI like to explain it using squash as an example.  There’s all types of squash: yellow squash, zucchini, even pumpkins.   Yes, they are all the family, but you’re not going to see me carving a zucchini like it’s crazier pumpkin cousin.

The Difference:

That’s what we have with the Hemp Marijuana confusion and situation. both are considered cannabis, but the THC is what makes them different:

Hemp – NOT Psychoactive, less than .3% THC, 20%+ CBD, easy to cultivate in most climates, used for: plastics, oils, fibers, construction, body care, healthy dietary supplements, etc.

Marijuana – Psychoactive, High THC 5%-35%, 10%+ CBD (less than THC), used for medical and recreational use.

AHA! THC! Well… not really.  That .3% in hemp is a maximum, and even then, that makes it food grade quality.  HempWorx products, for example, have been tested by third parties and are safely BELOW 0.3% and are hemp derived.  Add in CBD which is shown to counteract and suppress THC’s “high” effects, now you’re REALLY not going to be getting high on hemp.

(Essentially, it’s like the poppy seed and opiate phenomenon. (You DID know that eating a poppyseed product like a poppyseed bagel or poppyseed muffin could possibly show positive for opiates, right?) Legal, you’re not getting high from it, but possibly detectable in a lab test.  It is something to be aware of if you are subject to random drug testing.  While highly unlikely, they can’t guarantee you won’t get a positive result.)

For this reason, Hempworx has produced a THC-Free “Broad Spectrum” version of their products as well if you ARE drug tested.

Is hemp marijuana?

So, let’s say you’re in the wilds of Kentucky and happen across an industrial hemp field.  How are you going to know that you aren’t looking at marijuana?   Well, marijuana is broad leafed, a tight bud, or looks like a nugget with “hairs” and looks like a short, fat bush.  Hemp is very different.  Growing up to 16 ft tall, with plants as close as 4 inches to each other, it has skinnier leaves concentrated at the top with few branches and leaves below.

Hack your AncestryDNA – CBD in your Genes

Hack Ancestry DNA results and learn more about your geneticsDid you know you can download your AncestryDNA results and get your raw data files?  Our DNA tells us so much more than just who we are related to.  With a raw AncestryDNA data file, you can upload into other analyzers and learn more about your unique health risk factors.  It will assist you in learning more about how to live a healthier life for your genetics!  In fact, researching DNA led to the first time that I ever heard of the EndoCannabinoid system and why CBD is a needed nutrient. (Click for MORE INFO on the ECS from a different blog entry.) By learning more about how our genes are functioning in our liver, kidneys, Neuro-transmitter pathways, celiac vulnerability, etc., we can get answers about on how to work towards a healthier body.

Here’s how to get your AncestryDNA data file:
  1. Log into your account at
  2. Click the gear in the top right corner
  3. On the new screen, there will be a menu on the right to “Download Raw Data”.
  4. Enter your email and proceed with security steps
mthfr support snipped ancestryDNA resultsI have a DNA .zip file.  Now What?

Head over to a site like  and select “Sterling’s App”  at the top to begin.  This site began to help users identify if they carried a specific gene mutation that affects a large part of the population.  It has grown to help users analyze their DNA across multiple risk areas because our bodies are more complex than just a single gene.  The result of this growing project is a 50+ page report that separates out your body’s systems.  Lists then color code your genetic markers with green, yellow, and red to help you quickly identify possible areas of concern.  (There is also a section on the Endocannabinoid system!)

Don’t miss the last pages of the report which contain helpful charts to understand how the body processes nutrients.  After all, like a car’s engine type processes fuel, our unique genetics impact how we process what we put into it!  (Disclaimer: I am in no way affiliated with them, it is just a really neat product to explore.)

I wish I could say that once the results come back it will be simple to understand, but our bodies just aren’t that simple.  Understandably, genes are complex and impact each other.  You will be able to search the SNPs across the internet when you begin your journey for more information.   It’s fascinating stuff!

Have fun learning!

CBD and the EndoCannabinoid System

Did you know that our bodies are hard-wired for Cannabis and CBD?  The Endocannabinoid system has CBD receptors spread throughout our bodies. (Just like our nervous and lymph systems!)  Hemp-derived CBD is non-psychoactive and can help with a variety of ailments because of the EndoCannabinoid system.

We’ve all heard of Scurvy (the name for vitamin C deficiency)… The pain or other issues in your body might be from a CBD deficiency.   CBD can help with pain, skin, focus, blood levels, and any of the many other areas below:

Brief History of Cannabis and the ECS:

  • Through history, across cultures, and up to the the 1800’s, cannabis plant extracts were commonly used for a number of medicinal purposes.
  • 1937 – The United States prohibition against cannabis (hemp was the innocent bystander, unfortunately.)
  • 1970’s – The “War on Drugs” completely removed hemp from the American landscape
  • 1992 – building on research dating from the 1960’s, Dr. Raphael Mechoulam discovered two receptors CB1 and CB2. They interact with Anandamide, a fatty acid neurotransmitter. CB1 interacts in the central nervous system, while CB2 interacts with the peripheral nervous system.
  • It was named the Endocannabinoid System after the cannabis plant.
  • Since then, researchers have produced over 20,000 scientific studies referencing cannabinoids.

An overview of the Endocannabinoid System (ECS):

  • Regulates balance in our body’s immune response, communication between cells, appetite and metabolism, memory, and more.
  • The human body produces endocannabinoids (endogenous cannabinoids: anandamide and 2-AG ) which are natural equivalents of the compounds found in the cannabis plant, such as THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol).
  • Naturally occurring cannabinoids (CBD) from hemp interact with our bodies and trigger its beneficial effects in the ECS.
  • Even though it is linked to important processes and is concentrated in the brain, nervous system, and reproductive organs, it does not affect regions of the brain controlling heart and lung function. Meaning it is virtually impossible to overdose:
  • CB1 receptors are mostly found in the brain, spinal cord and organs, such as the heart, uterus, small intestine, testis, liver, and peripheral cells
  • CB2 receptors are mostly found on cells of the immune system, including T-cells, B-cells and macrophages, and the spleen
